Our little cartographers learned about maps and globes. They learned that the globe can be divided into 4 sections (hemispheres). More importantly, we noticed that Earth has lots more water than land! We are excited to study Earth's oceans this year!
These super sleuth readers are reading and discussing an article about Polar Bears. Together, they used magnifying glasses to find text clues and use the details to "unlock" the meaning. P.S.-I am having technical difficulty with the blog header. I will work to fix this. Everyday has been a joyful time as the children get to know the routines and come together as a class. They are thoughtful and studious and very kind to one another.
Our mathematicians worked together to find different combinations of 10. They used math vocabulary such as number sentence/equation, plus sign, and equal sign. We will continue to practice/review addition and subtraction through 10. We have also been learning about how authors give characters feelings. We talked about Stellaluna's feelings throughout the story. Today we started the I-Ready diagnostic reading assessment. This assessment provides a snapshot of students' reading knowledge in the following domains - phonological awareness, phonics, high-frequency words, vocabulary, literature comprehension, and non-fiction. I have attached a link that contains information about the I-Ready test. We will go over the results during parent-teacher conferences. www.i-ready.com/diagnostic-training-video.asp ![]() ![]() Here we are...the first day of first grade! We have had a wonderful start to the school year! We have 18 highly-motivated and delightful classmates! The children couldn't wait to dig into their new supplies and organize themselves. Having their own desks is a new experience and a big deal. We did some "getting to know you" activities that have already helped to foster a cooperative and caring classroom. We are gradually learning the classroom and school rules and expectations. They are loving the new playground! We have started our new reading program, ReadyGen. We are reading the book, Stellaluna, and learning about beginning, middle, and end of stories and characters' personalities. The theme of the story is friendship. We are loving Stellaluna! |
